Symphony by Aurea Stone vs Traditional Engineered Stone: A Guide for Fabricators

Urban Stone Source · Published June 2026

Standard engineered quartz — the product most fabrication shops cut every day — contains between 70 and 93 percent crystalline silica by mass. Symphony by Aurea Stone contains 0 percent crystalline silica, independently certified. That single difference affects OSHA compliance requirements, shop health risk, and increasingly, project specification eligibility.

The Core Difference: Silica Content

Traditional engineered quartz is manufactured using ground quartz aggregate — the primary source of crystalline silica exposure in stone shops. Under OSHA 29 CFR 1910.1053, fabricators cutting these materials must implement engineering controls (wet cutting or local exhaust ventilation), maintain a written exposure control plan, and provide medical surveillance for workers exposed at or above the action level of 25 μg/m³ for 30 or more days per year.

Symphony by Aurea Stone is manufactured using an alternative mineral composition that eliminates crystalline silica entirely. When your shop processes Symphony, no crystalline silica dust is generated. OSHA's silica standard does not apply to that cutting operation. The same standard equipment used for traditional quartz can be used for Symphony without additional dust controls or wet systems.

Symphony Specifications

Symphony by Aurea Stone is available in 9 colors across the Opera and Harmony collections (US exclusive edition), in both 2cm and 3cm thickness. The surface uses NanoInk printing technology — ink injected up to 1mm deep for visual depth and color accuracy. The NEOS Protection system is applied during manufacturing, providing a lifetime anti-stain warranty. The manufacturing process — EcoPress — achieves zero process water waste and up to 90 percent recycled raw material content.

Symphony holds an EPD (Environmental Product Declaration), an independently verified lifecycle environmental assessment. For projects pursuing LEED credits or specifying sustainable materials, the EPD provides the documentation required.
